I think 256 potential states in a single cell would be the blue sky outcome and something achieved over a long period of development whilst the tech is in use in other ways. ie. you're using the income and learnings derived from churning this out at scale to improve the tech for the next product.
Being able to have 4 different states would be pretty good - from a digital standpoint, you're effectively doubling the density of an array without having to shrink it.
