"Shell has racked up yet another hydrocarbon discovery offshore Namibia, although it is too early to say if it is commercial. The Enigma-1X probe is being drilled in the supermajor’s prolific Petroleum Exploration Licence 39 by Northern Ocean’s semi-submersible drilling rig Deepsea Bollsta, which is being managed by Odfjell Drilling.
A Shell spokesperson told Upstream: “As part of our multi-well campaign in Namibia, Shell and its joint venture partners have safely and successfully concluded drilling our sixth exploration well, Enigma-1X, in PEL 39. The data we’ve gathered so far confirms the presence of hydrocarbons and further evaluation is required to determine commercial potential.”
Enigma-1X was spudded at the end of February at a site about 15 kilometres south-southeast of Shell's Jonker-2A appraisal well. Jonker is expected to be the focus of Shell's first commercial project in Namibia, so a decent discovery at Enigma would boost the economics of any development.
At this stage, it is not known if Shell will carry out a production test on Enigma-1X and therefore retain the Deepsea Bollsta at location, or deploy the rig to drill a new prospect or undertake a flow test at a previously drilled well. The charter of the semisub is due to end sometime in June.
Immediately west of Shell's acreage, semisub Deepsea Mira is still operating on TotalEnergies' Venus-2A appraisal well, while drillship Tungsten Explorer has just arrived in Walvis Bay after completing drilling and testing operations on the French company's Mangetti-1X discovery well. Directly north of Shell's licence, the Hercules semisub is carrying out a flow testing operation on Galp Energia's Mopane-1X discovery probe."
