Here is a link to an old newspaper article (The Argus 1882)about the Castlemaine field with reference to the Ajax mine and some others. This and similar gold articles from the NLA on line collection make excellent reading IMO.

The issues relating to Castlemaine, Ballarat, Bendigo, Maldon and other nearby fields havn't changed at all HOWEVER technology has. And there lies the "speculative" business case for CGT.
Miners in these fields go broke if the resource size is insufficient in relation to where it is i.e. depth and proximity (if any) from nearby underground workings).
There are many dozens of targets in the CGT portfolio and the company is doing what it must . . . measuring the ounces before proceeding to a mining plan for Ballarat and Castlemaine in the first instance. The old article indicates that grades near the surface were consistent with hat was below ... which is roughly consistent with recent anns and what a numebr of posters on share forums are saying.
Robertxx is suggests 1 oz/tonne. 1oz/ton (28gms) used to be pretty common (3oz/ton was mentioned somewhere..... so if CGT can get it I'll be over the moon. If they can get half that on some reasonably sized targets I'll still be quite happy. If they get 3oz somewhere.....
The Ballarat prospect will remain speculative until some further drill results are forthcoming..... and forthcoming they soon will be. If I were to put my statistics (ie.punters) hat on the law of averages comes into clear view given, as I mentioned, the largenumber of known targets to be be drilled by CGT in due course.
I stand happy to be corrected on any of this. I'm not a geo.
cheers
