...but the underlying message in this is that EV is growing (albeit a declining growth) but interest has skewed towards hybrids. Even in Australia.

New car sales booming, record for April

New vehicle sales in Australia set a record for the month of April as demand remained strong and global car manufacturing backlogs freed up further.

But Tesla sales slipped in April, with 2077 delivered, for a market share of 2.1 per cent, making it the No.10 ranked brand of all players.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries announced on Friday that 97,202 vehicles were delivered in April, up 18.3 per cent on the same month last year.

Chamber chief executive Tony Weber said that for the first four months of calendar 2024, sales had reached a high on a year-to-date basis at 401,654 vehicles, 50,515 more than the opening four months of 2023.

The FCAI figures showed Australia was starting to mirror global trends with a slowdown in the growth of full-battery electric vehicles, which in April accounted for 6.4 per cent of total new vehicle sales, against 7.9 per cent a year earlier.

Buyers prefer hybrid vehicles – powered by petrol/diesel and an electric motor. Hybrids and plug-in hybrids made up 18.3 per cent of new vehicle sales in April, against 7.5 per cent a year ago.

Time for the Government to start giving away Teslas to anyone on a pension to get those sales figures moving.
