Did the machine they use stimulate or reduce brain activity? If it reduced it, that would make perfect sense to me.

Deep meditation, OOB experiences and astral travel all require an acquiescence of the dissociative boundary we call self (ego). Even acute trauma will do it, eg. war, painful prolonged childbirth. The less brain activity, the less self-consciousness, the more we open up to Reality. I define Reality (Truth/God) as that which is left after our thoughts about reality have disappeared. The stories we hear differ because no one lets go completely. Subconscious imprints continue to colour the experience.

Psychedelic drugs have a similar effect. They actually reduce brain activity rather than increase it.
