I do like the fact you look for solutions outside the box with your positivity regarding a direct democracy as i don't mind the concept of it, however one would want to edumacate the public first imo cause they ain't that bright and if they voted on everything it would sure be an interesting world Lol.
I'll have to look into the Swiss a bit more as i don't fully understand what goes on there.

I have heard of the USA and they are doing and have been doing similar things however i have also noticed a bit of a change in the wind in some areas due to a Scotus that seems to uphold and protect the Constitution a bit more than they did a few years back. For this to happen i would imagine that they might not have as much control as they would like people to think, at the very least they must have less control than they use to imo.
