Exactly. A rad-hardened chip wouldn't be designed so it can be chucked into a Roomba that's zooming around Chernobyl. It would be designed to (hopefully) prevent, or at least alert to, something like that happening again.
It would be pretty short sighted if anyone thinks that applications and validations in an extreme environment wouldn't have benefits in less extreme environments.
