• 47Mt of thermal coal futures and options cleared in April’24, 22% below the 61Mt cleared in March’24 although 72% (19.6Mt) higher than April’23 volume.

• 37.5Mt (80%) of total monthly volume cleared in ICE Rotterdam contracts.
• 8Mt (17%) in gC ICE Newcastle contracts.
• 1.5Mt (3%) in ICE Richards Bay contracts.
• YTD’24 futures volume of 196.8Mt is 27% higher than the 155.4Mt cleared YTD’23.

• The Calendar '25 Coal Futures contract saw some volatility during the month as the price for all hubs increased by between 4%-7% mid-month before falling back and ending April on par with the price at the end of March.

• Freight rates remained strong with the C5 route rate fluctuating between $10\mt and $12\mt corresponding with data reportedly showing an increase in coal transported from Australia to China.
