Alex you are correct..we had the plague of the Black Death of the 17th Century which wiped out half of Europe and hung around for over two hundred years ... no atmospheric phenomenon of so called excess of CO2....And the terrible Flu period of . The 1920's killed millions a huge number of deaths more deaths than those killed during the First World War !!! ...again no massive CO2 in the environment...but again a plague arrived !!!!
