f course Albanese is doing no such thing.... but this is a nation building policy.if this is an attempt at nation building - I suggest that it's a very very poor attempt - and that there are far far more basic things that require foundational building for a nation - such as housing, care, education of people - you have to get the people set, BEFORE you can seed industries

trying for a return to the days of white goods, food, furniture an car manufacture is fraught with a set pathway to smallness
there is no way that Australia could become a major exporter of things like washing machines and cars ---------------- there is just way way way too much against such a concept
so, at best - all Oz could do would be to manufacture for a local market - and lotsa luck with building better washing machines than people like LG or Bosch and similar -
IMO, we would get slaughtered on quality, slaughtered on price, slaughtered on after sales service ------------------ ditto ++++++ cars
if we WANT to get into things that we CAN do and have a clear difference in the way we do things -------------- then invention, innovation and research are as if they are tailor made for Australians ------------- why?because we 'think' differently. And we 'think' in terms of new ideas and concepts -
if we look at national characteristics - we find things like the Japanese were very good at applied science - but, they were dreadful at working out new things - they were dreadful at many things
Oz is great at thinking up new things - and very very good at getting things going with a bit of wire and some sticky tape ------------------ some other nations have that kind of character - Russians are crazy inventors and wire and sticky tape people.
Asians are incredible at pragmatic solutions ---------- but, Ozzies - they have a special place in that kind of world ------
if we look to the past - we look to people like Headlie Taylor - his brilliance was in ideasyes, he was a good enough backyard engineer to make stuff - and did commercially, but his real forte ------------- was conceptual thought -
and
his inventions - now feed a great part of the world.Just imagine if we educated and backed people like this -------------- people who helped feed the world ---------------- that's a bit of a leap up from making a few washing machines
