On that point, I feel it may be provocative to be reminded of a quote by Tony Ottaviano; that goes something like: "If you are NOT in construction TODAY, (circa 2023), you will NOT be in production in 2024".
Kind of paints the production picture dunnit?
As you said, they will never be producers under their own right, but under the umbrella of big national and/or multinationals - but even then, that's not happening tomorrow.
