You may very well say that and people may very well agree with you. But I ask you, don't we have a clear cut case here of populations living in some kind of peace, when out of the blue a bunch of thugs materialises in peaceful territory and does unspeakable things to some of the people and kidnaps a lot of the rest of them? Do the Israelis have any reasonable prospect of seeing any still living hostages returned? I would say, the chances are, unfortunately no. Is there not just cause here then for fearful reprisal, in terms of destruction of property and of course consequent fatalities and injuries of the perpetrators and their obvious supporters. You reap what you sow. As Churchill said, drawing on Biblical authority, you sow the wind and you must expect to reap the whirlwind.
