There are 2 choices as you say, peace in the medium term isnt possible, unless Putin withdraws... unlikley.

More killing sadly until Russia decides it has had enough of Putin's war.... or a hell of a lot more killing, rule by terror, throw away the systems of law, jail or murder opposition as he is currently doing in Russia in the areas that he will seek to control... etc.. possible WW3 moving on a NATO country.

Your other alternative of Peace doesn't exist while fascism is spreading into one country and most likely to the next. It would be Ukrainian 2.0 then Latvia... then Finland.

There was a decade of trying to work out peace in Eastern Ukraine prior to Putin's overt invasions labeling totally unbelievable as a "special operation".. zThe special operation was/is the destabilization of Ukraine and installation of puppet government.
