In fact the Germans were making synthetic petrol from coal in WW2 ... some believe the Messersmitt was not up to the Spitfire for this reason alone ... whereas the Spitfires were running on 100 octane Avgas, the ME109s were running on 85 octane synthetic fuel which was the main reason they lost the Battle of Britain as they couldn't match the Spitfires (and Hurricanes) accordingly.
But maybe the real deciding factor was the radar used by the Brits.
