Without any 'bleeding like a stuck pig' feelings, I would suggest that custom is one of many that runs counter to Judaism and Christianity, where first born is God and the rest of us are seconds. Solomon, David, Moses, etc weren't first borns, but given the nod by their God. Diehard Muslims can't come at that and see that as yet another reason to wipe them from existence.

Would the Russian born first Jewish child be expected to become a rabbi?

I led to believe that is the tradition of the Russian Orthodox Church?
