I'm guessing you are referring to pidyon haben, a tradition that offers God payment in return for him not taking the first born son ... really a payment to the priesthood to supplement their income and a relic, long since dismissed as serious ritual.
Either way I'm fairly sure jewish boys are treated are valuable sons, regardless of their station.
