I would argue origin democracy was about encouraging male citizens to play an active participation in government by throwing their names into a lucky dip for the annual selection political representatives .... that or suffer public humiliation and penalty for being a noncompete.

Socialism is a different thing to democracy ... democracy is power to the people, socialism is ownership of the means of production and control of who gets what and at what cost by a collective in pursuit of that collective's idea of fair equity distribution (the haves are penalised to the benefit of the have nots).
