This explains the status a bit better: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20221215-the-batteries-made-from-wood
The company already has the material (lignin) from their wood pulping (it is not wood as simply described, it is part of the material that occurs in natural wood, excluding the cellulose fibres), and is looking for ways to make money out of it. Whilst it has been demonstrated that it can work as an anode material, keep in mind that there are battery materials being considered and tested with billions of dollars of R&D for over 20 years which still aren't available commercially, because they tend to catch on fire, or other safety considerations such as under impact react badly, or deteriorate quickly, or don't hold a charge, or so many other issues. So to be a sustainable alternative, it has to function somewhat nearly as well and certainly at least as safe as existing battery materials. I'd say we won't see this "lignode" material commercially available for at least 15 years, if ever. It will not impact the graphite industry in any way for at least the next 15 years.
