who would have ever thought that Zermat would be flooded?
If people aren’t awake to the fact that things have changed - then they aren’t asleep, they are in a coma
Zermatt has experienced flooding. In July 2019, the Swiss resort of Zermatt was unexpectedly flooded when the Triftbach stream burst its banks[1][2]. This flooding occurred on the hottest day of the year, without any rainfall, and was caused by a pocket of meltwater in the glacier above the stream that suddenly emptied itself.
More recently, in June 2024, Zermatt was again affected by severe flooding and landslides[3][4][5]. The village was cut off from the rest of the world when both road and rail access were closed due to flooding and landslides. The river Vispa and Triftbach Creek, which run through the center of the village, turned into muddy torrents. This event was part of a larger weather system affecting the region, with heavy rains causing floods and landslides in various parts of Switzerland.
The 2024 incident was particularly severe, as it not only flooded parts of Zermatt but also isolated the village completely, disrupting transportation and forcing evacuations in nearby areas. The combination of snowmelt from a great winter season and recent rainfall contributed to the flooding and soil instability, leading to dangerous conditions throughout the region.
