Putin currently coping four vectors of attack:

Ukraine and the West
Struggling Economy
Excessive losses in the military that could result in an uprising
Fading imperial dream that could culminate into back stabbing and even a coup by the elite

Putin seems most concerned by the fourth scenario. That probably is why he flushed out the military hierarchy, chopped Pathushev and appointed his Niece to the position of Deputy Defense minister. That could worsen the current discontent in the military even more.

As it stands, only way Putin can get out of this mess is Trump.Trump could be haven or hell for Putin, time will tell.
That is only if Trump wins which is highly doubtful.
