Well hopefully some pathogens were harmed!
I expect that they are taking a genetically engineered strain of e. coli that luminesces, and mix it into the patients urine, which is naturally sterile, and hopefully full of Recce magic secret sauce. Then, they just have to measure how much it glows (or stops glowing) as a proxy for bacterial growth. Much quicker and easier than growing multiple cultures.
