For Newsom to run he needs Biden to step aside. That's the only way Biden can be overturned as nominee. If waiting for 2028 has entered Newsom's head as a reason not to run it shouldn't have. The Republican nominee has a big personality but he's a weak candidate. Biden at age 78 was able to beat him, and Trump hasn't improved in the intervening 4 years.
