Oh dear, yet another announcement about a new battery material. Trouble is that even Mohamad, the inventor of the substance who coincidently is looking for a bucket of money to develop it says it might take 10 years to make a battery let alone commercialise it. Considering we have already had solid state lithium batteries operating in laboratories for nearly 10 years now without any public production success no one should be holding their breath waiting or making any investment decisions on K Ion batteries just yet.

Another problem that a potential K Ion battery will have especially for mobile applications is weight, Potassium weighs 7 times as much as Lithium. Now all batteries have more components than just their active ingredient but to be energy dense a decent proportion of the battery needs to be active so Potassium Ion cells would have a worse energy density figure than the current Sodium Ion cells which already lag all Lithium Ion chemistries.

So if everything lines up we may see a rock battery offer a cheaper alternative for stationary power storage in 20 years. Or maybe not
