I am wondering if this is also being considered due to sequestration however I am unsure if STO holds any critical technology although it says it has it further down cost curb than many others however much of that cost base is reduced due to existing infrastructure and extending life of that infrastructure.

Parties looking at STO may be looking at doing deal with aussie govt and getting ability to be supplying green gas and having a locked in gas supply locally for Aussie Govt ( an the parties would expand existing fields and tie ins and export even more) Average green punter won't ever work it out and will just be happy to have some cheap energy in Australia.

Management at STO - much prefer offshore bid as lesser competition worry and most would keep job to deal with local assets

Alaska being USA and PNG will be interesting and sell down would be welcomed by other partners so they could top up and take control.

All this adds a huge premium to deal if it is even being devised as it is a multileg one and not simple and valuations on PNG and Alaska at current stage of development should be getting a premium in a breakup.

Aussie govt is in a tough position considering they have done everything possible to stop competition, capital investment and exploration in gas assets and then wants to stop the very sale of something that they say should not exist as a energy source in 15 years time.

For WDS this is a possible positive as it may give them even better position negotiating with govt .

Silence recently from WDS and STO has been very suspicious since failed negotiations .

Saudi Aramco 2223.SE and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) are experts at timing when there is political upheaval and elections around the world and like Chinese have very long term plan and strategy.

Nice to see it above $8 and lets see if it can hold gains overseas tonight as big punter firm up positions and trades

Australian Govt has now taken the position that gas is a necessary source of energy during the transition to renewables , which in reality means Australia will need gas for another thirty years at least.
FIRB never got to rule on the Brookfield takeover of Origin as it was stopped in its tracks by major shareholders voting against it. Origin is now almost $2 more than the Brookfield offer. I think FIRB would have not approved , and this case will probably go the same way , but if there is an offer and that’s a big if , at least it will help the market to focus on the real value.
