Agree .
l no longer think hydrogen will be powering heavy equipment as much as people previously thought . Except maybe ships. Otherwise l reckon battery technology has got its nose in front there .
l do think it will find an important role as an energy sink as you suggest . Located at energy hubs close to where electricity is generated reducing transmission costs . Sucking up excess generation from the duck curve and producing hydrogen for conversion to ammonia for fertilizer , plastics etc .
l think renewable energy hubs will be pretty interesting places . Storing energy for firming . Using excess generation for hydrogen and desalinated water . Hosting data centres etc .
They could become population centres like ports did 200 years ago.
