Supergene Processes and Enrichment ExplainedSupergene Processes:
- These occur near the Earth's surface, where weathering and water from rain (meteoric water) play a significant role.
- The primary activity here is the oxidation (reaction with oxygen) and chemical weathering of minerals.
- Water from precipitation infiltrates the ground, carrying oxygen and other reactive agents.
What Happens During Supergene Processes?:
- Oxidation: Primary sulfide minerals (like galena or chalcopyrite) in the ore deposit react with oxygen and water. This process breaks down these minerals.
- Leaching: As the minerals break down, metals within them (like lead, copper, or zinc) are released and carried downwards by the moving water.
- Redistribution: The metals move downward through the soil and rock layers.
Supergene Enrichment:
- This specifically refers to the concentration of metals at a certain depth below the surface.
- As the metals carried by water move downwards, they reach a boundary where the oxygenated zone meets unoxidized primary minerals (the supergene-hypogene boundary).
- Here, the metals in the water react with the primary sulfide minerals to form new, secondary minerals which often have higher metal concentrations than the original ore.
Key Points:
- Supergene Processes: Near surface, involve weathering and water from rain.
- Supergene Enrichment: Metals leached from upper layers are concentrated at a deeper level where they form new, richer ore minerals.
Simplified Example:
Imagine you have a rock that contains some lead. Near the surface, rainwater seeps into the rock and reacts with the lead minerals, breaking them down. This water carries the lead deeper into the ground. When it reaches a point where there's less oxygen, the lead precipitates out and combines with other minerals, forming new, richer lead deposits.
This process results in an enriched zone just below the weathered surface where the concentration of valuable metals is higher.
By understanding these processes, geologists can better locate and extract these enriched ore zones, making mining more efficient and profitable.
Which is why it sounds like high grade rock chips which have not been subjected to weathering could be indicative of what lies beneath due to Supergene Enrichment at the Supergene-hypogene boundary.
