the Catholic Church ruled the Euro-centric world for around 1,000 years (from Constantine to the 15thC Enlightenment).... anybody remember the Catholic Inquisition? what about the Catholic Empire beginning in the 15thC when they set up missions all round the world raking in converts and gold for the church coffers?
