If BHP were to buy out Shell's remaining shares of around 10%, the price of WPL will shoot up as the market will see this as BHP showing interest in potentially taking over WPL. If it got to the stage where BHP were to takeover WPL they would offer an amount higher than market value and the shares would shoot up on the stock exchange closer to BHP's offer price. WPL would remain on the stock exchange and shares in WPL could still be traded normally if BHP were to make a bid. If the bid is accepted by WPL shareholders then BHP will then own WPL and WPL will be dislisted off the stock exchange once the takeover date expired. Naturally, all remaining shareholders in WPL would be paid BHP's offer price if they still held the stock when WPL was delisted.
