I think Panguna runs 0.4% copper and 0.4g/T gold. Both of those in isolation are probably uneconomic, but together they make Panguna viable. The other reason Panguna can be viable is the low strip ratio of 0.8 : 1 as well as the size of the thing. I think RIo had to run the massive mine 24/7 in order to be profitable.
The irony is that a Singaporean mob yesterday offered almost $400 million for Rex's copper and gold deposit in South Australia. Rex has a resource barely one-tenth the size of Panguna. BOC market cap - only $200 million. Go figure!
