A section of the overall resource is mined first and there would be profits made before going onto the next section.

WA1 will also earn in the vicinity of $400m per annum after tax mining the high grade 53mt @ 2.1%, mining for 30-50 years.
The overburden cost you talk about is a drop in the ocean.
