Solid-state batteries have been seen as the greatest promise in the past 15 years, and probably will be for the next 15 years too. Despite all the discussions and writings about them, little has been achieved so far. Companies can make good products with solid-state batteries on a small scale. However, the real challenge is to be profitable and competitively priced on a large scale, and that's where it gets stuck.

In my opinion, the demand for batteries in the next 10 to 20 years will be so high that every new technology will add to the existing ones rather than replace them. Each technology will have its own suitable application. In the future, I believe there will be many types of battery technologies for different uses, not just one.

It will be very difficult for a new technology to compete with lithium batteries on price because of the large scale at which lithium batteries are already produced. Hundreds of battery cell factories are currently being built around the world, almost all based on existing lithium technology with billions of government support.

Personally, I have limited knowledge in this area. However, I have no doubt that Jeff Dahn and Chris Burns are among the world's top experts in battery technology. Call me naive, but I trust that these people know what they are doing. If the chosen direction was not the right one, they would adjust their course. For someone like Jeff Dahn, this is not about money but about using his knowledge to help the world progress in the energy transition.

Additionally, I think it's always good to keep an eye on what Tesla is doing in terms of their battery technology. In that space I have a slightly higher opinion of Tesla than Volkswagen. Tesla seems to be doing fine with their lithium cells and working to improving rather than replacing the technology.

This is all just my opinion, NFA DYOR
