The next generation of EV batteries will be Solid State Lithium, nothing else come close for energy density in the foreseeable future and energy density is the single most important quality in an EV battery. Even right now despite all the talk about possible competitors nothing can hold a candle to Lithium Ion.
Stationary storage, now thats a different story, there are dozens of different types that could fit the bill there, flow batteries, pumped hydro, gravity storage as well as the range of chemical batteries with and without Lithium.
