The trend for bigger and bigger certainly has applied to land based wind turbines until now however because the blades are made overseas and have to be moved from the port to the worksite there is a practical limit to the length of the blades that can be transported by road. The 80m blades for the Nordex Delta 4000 turbines used at the Macintyre wind farm are right on that limit so according to Acciona any future turbines will not be any larger than the current models unless the blades are either made on site or transported in by helicopter neither of which are practical options in the foreseeable future. That is why Acciona is confident that the bases they are installing now will still be suitable for new turbines in 30 years time.
