All true. I cannot remember the company name but a major chem company built an Acid plant right next to the Lamp with most of its output dedicated to lamp. Different Acids are used throughout the SX process, not just C&L, H2SO4 is the biggest by a lot. Depending on purity you want in the final product purifying water and Sulfur is one of the major expenses of Making H2SO4. Lots of energy is also needed far more than the burning provides unless you are willing to release lots of SO2 into the air. Which has been prohibited in most countries for over 50 years. It is Cheep & Simple until you worry about purity and poisoning the environment. If you do it in an environmentally friendly way you do have lots of H2 left over which is becoming more valuable. The most common way today on a large scale is to break down the water into pure H and O. Burn sulfur in a pure O environment and then inject the proper amount of H. Catalysis are used to lower energy and increase efficiencies.
I do not have any idea What Lynas management will do at KAL. I do think that shutting it down till RE prices recover and BHP resumes production is being discussed. Can anybody in AU tell us what charges Lynas would pay if they lay off people? In US there is no charges at time of event. Unemployment is partially supported by a payroll tax on companies. That goes up and down depending on layoff history of company. State and federal government cover most of the up front cost. All companies contribute even if they have never had a layoff.
