S&P do not meet with the ASX or issuers when assessing index eligibility. ZIP was highest ranked of non constituents and when ALU was scheduled to be dropped due to corporate action, ZIP was announced as replacement. ZIP remains an ASX300 constituent.
This was not a surprising inclusion to those that follow this kind of thing. There isn't much predictive power for inclusions, though there is some evidence to suggest stocks run a little too hard in anticipation, which is a temporary blip before they do what they normally do. You can expect average short interest to increase as the main aussie futures contract is based on ASX200, so market making in that contract often requires some degree of shorting. Again, it doesn't mean much for the stock price on its own.
