Is Australia becoming a rates isolationist?

Australia's interest rate forecasts seem to be at odds with the forecasts and realities in similar markets.

Here, rates are still on hold at 4.35%.

NAB just changed its forecast for the cut to be as far away as May 2025, off the back of that stronger inflation data.

Some economists are even now hinting at a hike.

Meanwhile, central banks in Switzerland, Sweden, Canada and the EU have started cutting.

As AMP's Diana Mousina notes, the tone has also shifted in other markets, including NZ, England, and the all-important US.

As she notes, the main reason why is inflation data.

"Australia's global peers currently have lower inflation readings, especially for core inflation," she writes.

"But, wage growth among global peers has been higher and Australian consumers are faring worse, which is a risk for GDP growth.
