The argument that nobody wants unfranked dividends is not correct. I suspect that there are many holders who don't need franked dividends, those under the tax free threshold including many retirees, so I would be happy with any dividend, franked or unfranked. As to buy backs, well KAR's history on the impact of buy backs is poor. Yes theoretically buy backs should result in capital appreciation but I am far from convinced that this would work for KAR.
