Great wrap, thanks. I think it is well accepted that the current design of Li Batteries is only stopgap - as you say they cant survive the volume change on repeated charging and discharging. But also the creation of dendrites as Li atoms are repeatedly dissolved off and then plated back is a danger when they pierce the separator and short the battery.
How it will be resolved is unknown as yet - but it will be. The concept of EVs with no emissions on our city streets (forget for the moment the greenhouse thing) is so strong it will surely prevail long term. And eventually there will be a cost advantage over fuel, if the battery price comes down, including the cost of recycle.
I take heart from Gower's comments in the webinar as reported by @SEPA that companies in US, Germany and China can separate the metals from a Nb + Ta + ?? concentrate that will most likely be SUM's saleable product. A Ta by-product could position our Nb in a great position in the market. Meaning more profit. But all depends on the bulk grade of the ore when mined using high volume machinery.
I have not overlooked the possibility that an alloy containing both Nb &Ta might be the battery cathode of choice, or the surface enclosure of the cathode and anode particles.
Thanks too for your reports on your Auto Electrician business. I am always in awe - but being the happy owner of a 15 year old W204 you will understand that I have my heart in my mouth at times. And I can report that I have stripped down the ESL and replaced the $2 motor with a 'gunuine' $160 one from a shonky trader in SA, only to finally meet up with a Auto Electrician/Locksmith who installed an emulator, and tweaked a few other things. Amazing.
Now everything is fine but I top up the charge of the battery with a charger with a 'repair' function twice a month. Those cars seem to have drains that nobody has yet discovered. LOL.
GL everybody - there is no guarantee yet, of course, but I reckon the product is right - the place is right - and the people are right. That's about as much as any of us can expect. If indeed there are manipulators, and the price action could still just be the behavoiur of a disturbed market, then a POX on them! Let them die fat, poor and ugly.
