I wish there was a way to choose how we contribute to the country (whether it's through tax or the other measures I suggested). Then politicians might actually have an incentive to implement policies that are in the best interest of the people, not themselves.

I agree, it is not in the best interest of pollies to be cost effective.

Warren Buffet said it best, the best way to stop a deficit, is to fire everyone if there is a deficit.

It was in the context of the US congress but can be applied here also.
