Yes, hence the reason for dealing in the average.
The only objectively rational way to do it.

Fine, I'll play: petrol prices have fallen by 20% over the past 2 years and are unchanged from where they were a decade ago (that's in nominal terms, mind; in real terms they are at two-thirds of the level where they were a decade ago).

Well using the average in this instance is not appropriate - given the distribution of buyers.

As for cherry picking of data - you are generally pedantic about accuracy.
