Firstly the Bible is an ancient work and is not even remotely the final word on the state of the human spirit at death.
What Paul teaches is a rudimentary teaching at best regarding how to begin the process of bringing one's spirit to life.
What does, 'saved' even mean? There is no literal heaven or hell and we each leave this life in a state of our own making, so one imagines that saved is to move closer to God, because you have lived in obedience to, in your case, the Teachings of Jesus.
Every human spirit ends up in the same place and just like in this life, those who have obeyed God and lived in His good pleasure, who have educated themselves and worked for the good of their families and humanity in general will have a much better start to their spiritual existence than somebody who believes that faith and belief alone will prepare your spirit for the next journey.
