Book value doesn't have much bearing onto the SP which is sentiment driven, I agree.
However, it does have a bearing in terms of what risk to reward ratio you are paying in case of dooms day.
Also the valuations they use for their assets are also usually understated - meaning it is usually on the lower spectrum... Imo anyway.
