I think this exercise on my part is giving me better understanding.
MGT and others are interested to produce pure iron using hydrogen for a direct reduction process and ship the iron to steel manufacturers, rather than ship an iron concentrate for the manufacturer to reduce the iron, with or without coal.
Yes, I can understand the use of hydrogen to reduce the ore to pure iron without any carbon/coke involved, using what is called a direct reduction process. That does not produce steel but can provide "green" iron, as in no fossil product involved. The argument is that Australia is well placed to create hydrogen using solar generated electrolysis of water, and in combination with abundant high grade iron ore, deliver a price competitive product to steel manufacturers. The theory sounds good but the economics are under review with Fortescue backing away at present.
