Synthetic Graphite is mainly derived as a byproduct of processing crude oil at immense temperatures through thermal cracking (very ESG poor) to produce petroleum coke.
Petroleum Coke is then further heated to many 1000’s degrees to produce “synthetic” graphite.
Without crude oil production - you don’t have synthetic graphite. Without crude oil production you also don’t have petrol for gasoline engines….
If we are arguing that EV’s are “better” for the environment - it is oxymoronic to use synthetic graphite in their batteries.
