It doesnt matter whether this project is commercially viable or not. Its a nation-building social infrastructure project. By definition, it should be funded by taxpayers. As we do with schools, roads, hospitals.
I fear for our elderly posters high blood pressure being caused by the NBN. Just to reiterate, the annual cost of rolling out the NBN is only 1-2% of the annual federal budget. To make it easy for some to understand, if the NBN were a foxtel subscription, thats how I would try to sell it to the missus. 1-2% of the family budget ie the cost is comfortably within our means, while the benefits could potentially be game-changing.
Also have to remember population growth & the changing way we use the internet pushes the capacity limits of our aging internet infrastructure.
