    OR, does it make more sense to get the regions some sort of broadband via satellite or wireless which would be much faster and build a national backbone which would increase the service speed to the metro areas?

    REPLY: that is in fact what is happening with the NBN. The backbone will be fibre, most customers will also get fibre to the door (this is necessary as much of the copper network is past it's use by date is corroding and becoming unreliable), and those in remote areas will be serviced by a combination of enhanced wireless and satellite services.

    I think you need to read the NBN plan vertigo.
