The finch might not evolve into a chicken or a snake.
The theory doesn't say this.

But over 5 million years the finch will likely change into a creature substantially different from its current state, through a series of many gradual changes.

The scientists reckon that humans and chimps came (branched off) from a common ancestor millions of years ago.
The human 'line' and the chimp' line' are separate.
Humans (if we survive for 5 million years) will probably evolve into a different animal as will the chimps.

Did you know that there are sea animals which evolved to come onto land and then evolved further and went back to the water?

You do know that humans are made of 60% water......the smoking gun.......that we came from the water.
