From my observation, I am guessing the answer to your first question is as many times as necessary. Why? Because those small trades are the most efficient and effective way to maintain the share price at a certain level, to push it down, or to push it up.
So they sometimes bring an advantage to some traders and a disadvantage to others, and vice versa. And as there may be many bots working against each other, the end result is most likely decided by luck, just as trading without the bots.
Perhaps that is why bots are allowed. And perhaps they are nothing to worry about.
