This is where I think bio diesel will likely prove popular. You can use 100% existing infrastructure. I suspect over time big oil will start diluting diesel product with bio diesel (like E10 petrol) to show a shift to a lower carbon diesel.
In time, it'll become 100% bio diesel.
Ammonia is also a logical alternative. It's already used in trucking in the US and unlike hydrogen is much more stable, transportable and usable.
Both logically make a lot more sense than electrifying long haul freight vehicles.
