I believe it was deliberate, a smart move and within the rules.
Trial results announcements are malleable to a certain extent with announcement preparation, possible seeking of clarification from analysts etc, etc.
With the two events so close it was a great move to get the negative out of the way before releasing the positive. A little bit of good luck combined with good management.
